Some people work on the train; others are happy just to sleep or to admire the view from the window. That morning I took the stopping train to Chepstow which also calls at Severn Tunnel Junction and Caldicot. There weren’t many on board, but I had chance to draw a few of the people in the carriage. Quiteness is essential sometimes to help me concentrate on drawing, and journeys are a good opportunity to practise my skill.
These days I tend to use a pen more than a pencil, as it’s important to work quickly without hesitating. In one sense, I think of myself as collecting figures and faces – shapes that might one day feature in a future composition.
